20th anniversary of the accession of the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the European Union.
On May 1, 2004, one of the largest expansions in the history of the European Union took place, when ten new countries joined the EU. This day was a significant milestone not only for the Union itself but also for all participating states, which officially became part of this unique European community.
The new members were countries from Central and Eastern Europe, which had undergone political and economic changes in the previous decades after the fall of communism: Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and also island states Cyprus and Malta. This step was a symbol of the unification of Europe after decades of division during the Cold War.
The expansion had a significant impact on the political, economic, and cultural map of Europe. For the newly admitted countries, joining the European Union meant access to the single market, new trade opportunities, investments, and EU funds that supported their economic growth and modernization. They also gained the opportunity to co-decide on the future of European policy and participate in joint decisions on key issues such as foreign policy, security, and the environment.
For the European Union, this expansion meant another step towards unifying the continent and deepening cooperation between diverse cultures, nations, and economic systems. It was an expression of the vision of a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous Europe, where nations cooperate and help each other achieve common goals.
The 2004 expansion strengthened the EU not only in terms of area and population but also politically and economically, paving the way for further deepening of integration and the creation of common values and priorities.
