The medal commemorates the 100th anniversary of the minting of the Czechoslovak five-haliernik from 1924. The formation of Czechoslovakia on October 28, 1918 led to the necessity of a monetary reform, which was undertaken by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Alois Rašín. Professor Otakar Španiel submitted models for the five-haliernik, two-haliernik and ten-haliernik on May 29, 1922, and after modifications, the model for the five-haliernik received approval for serial minting. On August 7, 1922, the Kremnica Mint confirmed the suitability of the designs, and on February 24, 1923, the ministry approved large-scale production. By the end of 1923, 40 million pieces had been minted, of which 2.2 million were delivered to the Bank Office in 1924. The 1924 five-haliernik is today considered the rarest Czechoslovak circulation coin, which increases its appeal among collectors. The unclear reason for the minting and the exact number of pieces minted contribute to its cult status.
