War Medal Franz Joseph I - December 2, 1873, bronze variant, original ribbon, 1/1/1 On December 2, 1873, Emperor Franz Joseph I celebrated the 25th anniversary of his accession to the throne and on this occasion decided to establish a new military decoration, which could also retrospectively reward services rendered to the homeland and the monarch. The statute of the medal was published on December 31, 1873. According to it, the War Medal was awarded to everyone who served in the units of the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian army and war navy from the time Franz Joseph I ascended the throne until the medal was established, regardless of rank and status. The obverse side of the medal was designed by the Viennese medalist Josef Tautenhayn, and the reverse side was designed by the medalist Johann Pfeiffer. The medal had a circular shape with a diameter of approximately 36 mm and a weight of approximately 25 g. Symbolically, it was minted from artillery metal obtained from captured enemy cannons. Obverse side - in the center of the medal, a profile portrait of the emperor, with the inscription FRANZ JOSEPH I. KAISER V. OESTERREICH KOENIG V. BOEHM. ETC. APOST. KOENIG V. UNGARN (Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria, King of Bohemia, etc., Apostolic King of Hungary) around the edge in the interspace. Reverse side - in the center of the medal, the inscription 2. / DECEMBER / 1873, framed by an open wreath of oak and laurel branches. The War Medal was worn on a triangular chest ribbon with a width of 36-40 mm, in imperial yellow color, with transverse black stripes in the center, bordered on both sides by a black stripe and a yellow edge stripe (yellow-black version of the ribbon for bravery). The War Medal was awarded from 1873 practically until World War I.
