Lithuania is a republic with a parliamentary democracy. It is a member of the European Union (since May 1, 2004), the Council of Europe, a full member of the Eurozone, the Schengen Agreement, and NATO. Lithuania adopted the common European currency on January 1, 2015, as the last of the three Baltic countries. Before adopting the euro, Lithuania used its national currency, the litas.
