The territory of Greece occupies the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula and the islands in the Ionian and Aegean Seas. Greece is a parliamentary republic, headed by a president. It has been a member of the European Union since 1981, but it could only join the eurozone in 2000. The Euro became the official currency on January 1, 2001.
