Janko Jesenský (30. 12. 1874 – 27. 12. 1945) was a versatile literary and socially engaged personality and a prominent figure of Slovak literary modernism. He belonged to the "lost generation" that experienced the horrors of war firsthand. On the Russian front, he joined the Czechoslovak resistance. In the new Czechoslovak state, he worked in the state administration as a county governor. In 1929, he became the vice-president of the Regional Office in Bratislava. As a poet, Jesenský sought his own expression. He was inspired by Byron, Heine, Petőfi, Pushkin, Lermontov, and Sládkovič. In selections from "journalistic poetry," he wittily and ironically comments on both interwar life and life during the Second World War. In his novellas, he uses a grotesque method of literary scandalization. The pinnacle of Jesenský's artistic prose is the two-volume novel Democrats, a brilliant artistic mosaic of almost all aspects of First Republic life.<br />
