In 2024, gold continually reached new price thresholds, making it an attractive investment. The gold collector's coin with a value of 100 euros, dedicated to Slovakia's Intangible Cultural Heritage – Modrotlač, thus combines investment value with the historical legacy of modrotlač.
The National Bank of Slovakia announced a competition in December 2023 for the design of a gold collector's coin with a value of 100 euros themed around Slovakia's Intangible Cultural Heritage – Modrotlač. The technique of dyeing textiles has been popular in Slovakia for centuries. It is a specific process where a pattern is applied to the fabric using a special paste that does not capture the blue color of indigo during dyeing. This results in characteristic white ornaments on a dark blue background, which are a popular element of Slovak folk art. Modrotlač is also listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. This coin will join the 100 € coin from 2021 dedicated to the fujara. Fifteen authors participated in the competition for the artistic design of the coin with eighteen proposals, which the committee evaluated in May 2024, with ethnologist Oľga Danglová as an expert advisor. The winning design by Karol Lička depicts a detailed modrotlač floral ornament, crafted into relief, authentically reflecting the original patterns. The right side of the coin captures the modrotlač fabric and its manufacturer, paying tribute to the craft and its creators. Second place was awarded to Miroslav Schovanec and third place to Peter Valach. The coin will reach collectors in a limited edition of 6000 pieces in December 2024. This coin is a way for Slovakia to commemorate the significance of modrotlač as a precious symbol of national pride and craftsmanship, which should not fall into oblivion. L.V.
