The National Bank of Slovakia continues to issue 5 € coins, which have gained great popularity not only among collectors but also the general public. This year, the National Bank has already issued a 5 euro coin dedicated to the European bison. The next, eighth collector's 5 euro coin, will be dedicated to the majestic Western Capercaillie.
The Western Capercaillie, also known as the Wood Grouse, is a fascinating bird from the pheasant family, inhabiting vast areas from the taiga to Spain. This bird is predominantly found in environments where Scots pine grows. An adult male can grow up to 90 cm in height and weigh almost 6 kg. The male is characterized by a unique red coloring around the eyes and a light beak, while the female is less conspicuous. The average living space of an individual is around 30 km², but in recent years this space has rapidly decreased to less visited parts of the Slovak mountains. A competition for the design of this coin was announced in August 2023, with 21 designs submitted. The jury selected the design by Tomáš Lamač, DiS. The obverse of the coin features a depiction of a pair of Western Capercaillies in their natural forest environment, complemented by the national emblem, nominal value, and other necessary elements. The reverse of the coin depicts the courtship display of the Western Capercaillie, attracting the female with its characteristic behavior. Remarkably, the second place in the competition was also won by a design by Tomáš Lamač, DiS, and the third place was taken by Adéla Dařbujanova, DiS. This coin will delight not only collectors but also all nature lovers who will appreciate its aesthetic and thematic focus. The coin thus represents not only a valuable collector's item but also an important contribution to the protection and promotion of our nature.
5 euro coins are produced by the Kremnica Mint, s.p. Since these are coins made of common metals, brass is used as the material. Slovak 5 euro coins have a diameter of 34 mm and weigh 19.1 g. Their edge is serrated and they are standardly delivered in a plastic capsule that protects them from damage.
Despite the fact that collector's 5 euro coins have only recently started to be issued in Slovakia, they are very popular among collectors. Special collector's albums are also available, intended for storing Slovak 5 euro coins.
