The settlement of Vlkolínec is located in the north of Slovakia in the Liptov Basin and is a part of the town of Ružomberok. It forms a remarkably preserved settlement unit with wooden log architecture, typical for mountainous and sub-mountainous areas. Since 1977, it has been a folk architecture reservation, and it is not an open-air museum of folk architecture but a still-living settlement. In 1993, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List along with Banská Štiavnica and Spiš Castle. Vlkolínec contains 45 authentic homesteads with many archaic construction elements. Among the residential buildings, a log belfry from 1770 and a covered well stand out. The settlement is sensitively set in the natural environment on the edge of the Veľká Fatra mountain massif with the dominant peak Sidorovo.
