Specification
Muránska Planina National Park is located at the junction of central and eastern Slovakia in the western part of the Slovak Ore Mountains. It was declared in 1997 on an area of 20,318 ha. It belongs to exceptionally rare natural-landscape areas, relatively little affected by civilization influences.
Four geomorphological units meet in its territory: Vepor Mountains, Spiš-Gemer Karst, Stolické Mountains, and Horehronské Basin. The result is a very diverse karst and non-karst relief. The action of water has created deep valleys in the limestones and dolomites, such as the impressive Javorníková Valley with several waterfalls. The park contains many caves, sinkholes, springs, and surface karst phenomena. The flora is rich, with alpine and subalpine species abundantly represented. The most typical plant is the Muránska Daphne, which is endemic to Muránska Planina and grows nowhere else in the world. The fauna is also diverse. A typical feature is the semi-wild breeding of horses – the Muránska Norik type – on Veľká Lúka.

Obverse:
On the obverse of the coin, flowers of the Muránska Daphne are depicted in the lower part, and above them is a part of the ruins of Murán Castle. The state emblem is placed in the lower left part. Above it, in a vertical and horizontal line, the name of the state SLOVAK REPUBLIC is indicated. The year of minting 2006 is at the bottom edge of the coin. The stylized initials of the coin's design author Karol Ličko and the mark of the Kremnica Mint are on the right below the castle ruins.

Reverse:
On the reverse of the coin, a pair of Muránska Norik type horses is depicted. Above them is a part of the panorama of Muránska Planina. The depiction is completed on the left in a vertical and at the top in a horizontal line with the name of the national park MURÁNSKA PLANINA NATIONAL PARK. At the right edge is the designation of the nominal value of the coin 500 Sk.
