Malá Fatra National Park is a mountainous landscape unit in the northwest of Slovakia. It was declared in 1988 with an area of 22,630 ha. It is characterized by a beautiful landscape with a diverse relief, a multitude of plants and wildlife. The mountain range, with the highest peak being Veľký Fatranský Kriváň (1709 m), is approximately 23 km long and 13 km wide. The characteristic dominant feature is Veľký Rozsutec (1610 m), which is one of the most beautiful peaks in Slovakia. The lowest point is the mouth of the Hradský stream (358 m) in the Strečno gorge, and the largest waterfall is the Šútovský waterfall (38 m).
The national park area is used for recreational and sports purposes, with the most visited places being Vrátna Valley, Jánošíkove Diery, and Šútovský Waterfall. The cultural values of the area are also attractive - the castles of Strečno and Starhrad, folk architecture in Terchová, Štefanová, and Zázrivá, and folklore associated with the Jánošík tradition.

Obverse:
On the obverse of the coin, the state emblem is placed in the center, around which the Alpine longhorn beetle is depicted four times in a regular horizontal and vertical composition. At the edge of the coin, the name of the state SLOVAK REPUBLIC is inscribed. The year of minting 2001 is below the state emblem in a divided line. The stylized initials of the designer Mgr. art. Patrik Kovačovský are placed on the right, and the mark of the Kremnica Mint is on the left at the bottom of the coin field.

Reverse:
On the reverse of the coin, the dominant depiction is of the flower lady's slipper orchid. In the upper half of the coin field, a part of the tree crown is depicted with a view of Veľký Rozsutec. At the edge of the coin, the name of the national park MALÁ FATRA NATIONAL PARK is inscribed. In the lower half of the coin field is the denomination of the coin 500 Sk.
