Specification
The European Union is the result of the process of unifying Europe, which began after the Second World War. Its predecessors were the European Coal and Steel Community (1951), the European Atomic Energy Community, and the European Economic Community (1957). The founding states – Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, and Italy – were gradually joined by Denmark, Ireland, Great Britain, Greece, Spain, and Portugal. After the formation of the EU, Finland, Austria, and Sweden joined. The name European Union was adopted in February 1992 when the Treaty on European Union was signed in Maastricht, which came into force in November 1993. The European Union is based on the principles of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights, and freedoms. Its fundamental goal is to promote sustainable and balanced economic and social progress, especially by creating a zone without internal borders, strengthening economic and social cohesion, and establishing an economic and monetary union with a single currency.
On May 1, 2004, the largest expansion of the European Union in its history took place, and ten new countries joined the existing 15 member countries - Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia
