Alexander Dubček (27.11.1921 - 7.11.1992) is one of the most famous and significant Slovak politicians. He became a symbol of the fight against totalitarianism, for freedom, democracy, and social solidarity. He was a leading figure of the Czech and Slovak Spring of 1968, characterized by significant democratization of political, economic, and social life. This positive development was thwarted by the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops on August 21, 1968. Alexander Dubček was removed from the highest political office in April 1969 and later forcibly excluded from public life. For almost two decades, he lived under constant surveillance by state security. However, he did not give up, writing protest letters to state and parliamentary bodies and maintaining constant contact with foreign institutions and human rights activists. In November 1989, he was among the prominent figures of the democratic revolution that overthrew the totalitarian communist regime in Czechoslovakia. He became the chairman of the Federal Assembly of the CSFR and, after 1992, its deputy. He died on November 7, 1992, as a result of a tragic car accident.
