Juraj Fándly (21. 10. 1750 – 7. 3. 1811) – Catholic priest, writer, and public educator, was an enthusiastic national revivalist and promoter of the Slovak language. He was among the leading figures of the Enlightenment group of Bernolákovci, which, led by Anton Bernolák, created the concept of Slovak national revival ideology and attempted to establish Slovak as a literary language. As an Enlightenment thinker, he realized the importance of providing education to the common people. He considered preaching as one of the means. His ideas on this were summarized in the extensive work "Occasional and Festive Sermons." He also saw his mission in publishing books for all social classes ("Diligent Domestic and Field Farmer," "On Fallow Lands and Bees Conversations," "Herbalist"), which not only provided folk recipes for improving farming but also conveyed the knowledge of significant contemporary scholars and the European cultural heritage of previous generations. He explains and defends the ecclesiastical-religious reforms of Emperor Joseph II in the educational-entertaining work "Confidential Agreement between a Monk and the Devil."
