The Vihorlat Mountains are the easternmost Slovak volcanic mountain range. The Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area was declared in 1973. Despite its small area and altitude, Vihorlat is an impressive volcanic mountain range. The dominant rock is andesite. In many places, lava flows emerge to the surface and create rocky cliffs. The Vihorlat Mountains are among the most forested mountain ranges in Slovakia – up to 80% of its area is covered by forest ecosystems. There are also forest stands that are minimally disturbed by humans and have the character of natural forests with a primeval forest structure. The jewel of the mountains is Morské oko, which is one of the largest non-karst lakes in the Carpathians. When viewed from Sninský kameň, it resembles an irregular five-pointed star. The Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area lies at the interface of Pannonian and Carpathian flora. Currently, approximately 400 species of fungi, 60 lichens, 110 bryophytes, and 600 species of higher plants are known in it. The fauna is also species-rich. About 100 species of birds nest here, and its dense forests are inhabited by carnivorous mammals.
Obverse:
On the obverse of the collector euro coin, a green tree frog and a dragonfly are depicted in a water reed environment. In the lower part of the composition is the state emblem of the Slovak Republic, above which is the year 2023. The name of the state SLOVAKIA is inscribed in the upper part of the coin field. The mark of the Kremnica Mint, a state enterprise, consisting of the abbreviation MK placed between two dies, is at the bottom edge of the coin field, and to the left of it are the stylized initials of the collector euro coin author Mgr. art. Roman Lugár LR.
Reverse:
On the reverse of the collector euro coin, a deer stirring the water surface of Morské oko is depicted, bordered by a panorama of the mountains in the background. The nominal value of the collector euro coin 20 EURO is above the composition. In the upper part of the coin field, the inscription PROTECTED LANDSCAPE AREA VIHORLAT is inscribed, separated from the composition by a line following the inscription.
