Levoča grew at the crossroads of trade routes in eastern Slovakia under the Levoča hills. Together with Spiš Castle and the cultural monuments of its surroundings, it represents an authentically preserved set of medieval settlements, unparalleled anywhere in the world. Therefore, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Evidence of the city's wealth in the Middle Ages is the development and fortification system from the 13th to the 15th century. The main square, which was surrounded by the houses of wealthy townspeople, gradually filled with public buildings. In the middle of the square, the parish Church of St. James was built in the 14th century, and south of it, the town hall. The significant carver Master Paul worked in Levoča. Many unique carvings come from his workshop, including the highest preserved late Gothic winged altar in the world – the Main Altar in the Church of St. James, which was made between 1507 and 1517. The city has preserved many unique monuments in its fortified medieval core, and in 1955 it was declared an urban monument reserve.

Obverse:

On the obverse of the coin, three sculptures of the altar cabinet from the main altar of the Church of St. James in Levoča are depicted emerging from three blocks of wood. In the lower part of the sculpture on the right is the state emblem of the Slovak Republic. In the lower part of the middle sculpture is the year 2017, under which the nominal value of the coin 20 EURO is indicated in two lines. Below it is the mark of the Kremnica Mint MK and the stylized initials of the name and surname of the coin's design author Pavel Károly PK. In the lower part of the sculpture on the left is the year of completion of the main altar in the Church of St. James 1517, under which is the mark of Master Paul. At the bottom edge of the coin is the name of the state SLOVAKIA in the description.

At the bottom edge of the coin on the left is the inscription HERITAGE RESERVE in two lines and on the right the inscription LEVOČA.
