Košice, the second largest city in Slovakia, grew at the crossroads of trade routes in a wide basin by the Hornád River. The medieval city, which took shape during the 13th century, was surrounded by stone walls before its end. The main landmark of the elongated lens-shaped square of the free royal city has been the massive Gothic St. Elizabeth Cathedral since the end of the 14th century. Its main winged altar from the last quarter of the 15th century is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Next to the cathedral, a separate bell tower, Urban's Tower, and St. Michael's Chapel were built. The extent and significance of the medieval city are emphasized by monasteries, with the oldest preserved church in the city belonging to the Dominican monastery. The extensive city's buildings are dominated by many Baroque and Classicist noble palaces and burgher houses, often still with medieval cellars. The square at the end of the 19th century was completed with the exhibition buildings of the Reduta and the theater. The city, along with its historic core, declared a heritage reserve in 1983, is the first in Slovakia to hold the title of European Capital of Culture, awarded to it for the year 2013 by the Council of the European Union.
