Trenčín is the most significant center of central Považie and the seat of the Trenčín self-governing region. It is dominated by the unique silhouette of a medieval castle that grew on a rock with a preserved unique Roman inscription from the year 179 AD. The castle tower is associated with the name of the most famous owner of the castle, the oligarch Matúš Čák, who controlled his extensive estate from it at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The medieval town nestled against the castle hill developed on an ancient trade route along the Váh River. It grew around a road expanded into an irregular market square. After being granted city privileges in 1412, the inhabitants built fortifications during the 15th century. A remnant of it is the Lower Gate, which, along with the Gothic parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary standing on the slope above the town and the Baroque church and monastery of St. Francis Xavier in the square, belongs to the traditional historical landmarks of the former county seat. The preserved historical core of the town was declared a heritage reserve in 1987.
Obverse:
On the obverse of the coin is depicted Trenčín Castle complemented by a fragment of the Roman inscription from the Trenčín castle rock and the silhouette of the fortifications. In the lower part of the coin field is the state emblem of the Slovak Republic, above which is the year 2012. The name of the state SLOVAKIA is inscribed below the state emblem. The stylized initials of the name and surname of the author of the obverse design of the coin, Karol Ličko KL, are at its right edge.
Reverse:
On the reverse of the coin is depicted the Trenčín heritage reserve from an aerial view with valuable architectural monuments including the castle and the triangular square. At its left edge is the inscription HERITAGE RESERVE and at the right edge the inscription TRENČÍN. The designation of the nominal value 20 EURO is in the lower left part of the coin field. The mark of the Kremnica Mint and the stylized initials of the name and surname of the author of the reverse design of the coin, Miroslav Rónai MR, are in the lower part of the coin field.
