Trnava is one of the most important cities in Slovakia. It is characterized by a rich history and a number of architectural gems, primarily valuable ecclesiastical monuments. The historical development has roots in older settlements located at the crossroads of ancient trade routes. The settlement is first mentioned in a document of the Archbishop of Esztergom from 1211. The prosperous market place was granted the privileges of a free royal town by King Béla IV in 1238, making it considered the oldest documented royal town in Slovakia. In the 16th century, Trnava assumed the roles of the ecclesiastical and cultural center of the country for 150 years, as the southern parts of Hungary were threatened and occupied by the Turks. In 1543, the Archbishop of Esztergom moved here, and church synods were held. Due to this fact and the number of churches in its territory, it earned the nickname "Slovak Rome." Cardinal Peter Pázmány founded a university in the city in 1635, and Trnava also became a center of higher education. Its historical core was declared an urban monument reserve in 1987.

Obverse:
The obverse of the coin features a historical view of the Trnava University with the University Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The state emblem of the Slovak Republic is at the bottom of the coin field. Next to it is the name of the state SLOVAKIA, under which are two horizontal lines and the year 2011.

Reverse:

The reverse of the coin is a composition created from significant Trnava architectural monuments – the synagogue, Church of St. Anne, Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Church of St. James, Basilica of St. Nicholas, city tower, Church of the Holy Trinity, Church of St. Joseph, and the city walls tower. The composition is complemented by the depiction of Our Lady of Trnava. In the upper part of the coin field is the text TRNAVA MONUMENT RESERVE in two lines, under which are two horizontal lines and the designation of the nominal value 20 EURO. The stylized initials of the name and surname of the coin's design author Mgr. art. Roman Lugár and the mark of the Kremnica Mint are embedded in the depiction of the tower at the bottom edge of the coin.
