The Great Moravian prince Svätopluk I, before his death, divided the rule of the country among his sons. The younger Svätopluk II most likely became the appanage prince in Nitra. He was subordinate to his older brother – the Great Moravian prince Mojmír II (894 – 906). Svätopluk II, supported by the margrave of the Bavarian Eastern March Aribo, rebelled against his brother in 898. Emperor Arnulf sent the Nitra prince help from margrave Aribo and margrave Liutpold, who governed the Bavarian Northern March (Nordgau) and Carinthia. Liutpold and Aribo, with a large Bavarian army, ravaged the Great Moravian territory. At the beginning of 899, the Bavarians repeated the devastating campaign, but did not prevent Svätopluk's defeat. Mojmír imprisoned his brother in one of the castles, from which he was freed by the third Bavarian campaign. Svätopluk II was the Nitra prince for less than 5 years (894 – 899). His rebellion in 898 – 899 was overcome by the Great Moravian state.
