After the occupation of extensive territories of the Hungarian kingdom by the Ottomans, including the royal residence in Buda and the traditional coronation site of Hungarian kings in Székesfehérvár, Bratislava (then Pressburg) became the new capital of Hungary in 1536. It also served as the coronation city. Between 1563 and 1830, 11 Hungarian monarchs were crowned in Bratislava. This status brought intense development to the city. Ferdinand II became the fourth monarch from the Habsburg dynasty to be ceremonially crowned here on July 1, 1618. The elite of aristocracy and clergy gathered in the metropolis on the Danube, where grand celebrations, processions, and feasts culminated on the day of the coronation. Ferdinand II (1578 – 1637) was one of the most prominent figures in 17th-century European history. Besides the Hungarian royal title, he was also the King of Bohemia and the Holy Roman Emperor. He was a significant representative of the re-Catholicization process in Central Europe.
