The Carpathian Beech Forests are a transboundary world natural heritage site consisting of ten separate locations. Four of them are located in Slovakia and six in Ukraine. In Slovakia, they are the Vihorlat, Havešová, Rožok, and Stužica forests. The first location is part of the Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area, while the others are part of the Poloniny National Park. The Carpathian Beech Forests form a chain of islands of original natural forest and offer a wide representation of primeval forest examples. They represent a significant global genetic bank of beech. They boast trees of record dimensions, with individuals growing with extraordinary trunk thickness and heights up to 58 m, which is the largest measured height of beech worldwide. Their inscription into the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List was approved by the World Heritage Committee on June 28, 2007, and in 2011 the inscription was extended to include five locations in Germany under the name Carpathian Beech Forests and Ancient Beech Forests of Germany.
