300th anniversary of the coronation of Charles III in Bratislava
In the first third of the 16th century, Hungary was threatened by Turkish raids. After the occupation of the capital city of Buda, the Hungarian Diet decided in 1536 that the main and coronation city of Hungary would be Pressburg (today's Bratislava). Between 1563 and 1830, 11 monarchs and 8 royal consorts were crowned in the Gothic St. Martin's Cathedral. After the death of Joseph, Charles became the only living male heir of the Habsburg family, returning from Spain to Vienna. On his way, he had himself crowned as the Roman Emperor in Frankfurt am Main on December 24, 1711. As an emperor, he used the name Charles VI, and as the Hungarian king, he was titled Charles III. The coronation with the Hungarian crown was preceded by a session of the Hungarian Diet in Pressburg. After a month of negotiations, only when the candidate promised to fulfill the required conditions of the Hungarian estates, they agreed to his coronation, setting the day of the celebration for May 22, 1712. During his nearly thirty-year reign, Charles III rarely returned to Pressburg, as he was more occupied with battlefields in southern Hungary, the Balkans, and duties in Vienna. He is known as the creator of the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713, which established the indivisibility of the monarchy and new rules ensuring succession to the throne even through the female line.
