It became a symbol of the extermination of Jews during World War II. Alfréd Wetzler and Rudolf Vrba were among the first to not only escape from the camp but also inform the world about the horrors of industrial extermination. In the Auschwitz camp, the natives from Slovakia met for the first time in the summer of 1942. After almost two years of survival, they noticed that the camp was expanding in anticipation of new prisoners, and they decided to do everything in their power to prevent it. They escaped from the camp and embarked on a 140-kilometer journey to Slovakia. They arrived in Žilina on April 25, 1944, and reported to the illegally active representatives of the Jewish community in Slovakia about what they had experienced. Thirty-two pages of information entered history as the Vrba and Wetzler report. It became one of the most important records of the inhabitants of Slovakia in world history, which probably contributed to the fact that the deportations of Jews from Hungary were not completed. Obverse side: The obverse of the collector's euro coin is dominated by the silhouette of a large triangle composed of smaller triangles referring to the prisoner marking system in extermination camps. A vertical line runs through the center of the large triangle, dividing the coin field into two semicircles, to which a cartographic symbol of a railway track is connected. Both halves of the coin field are traversed by semicircles created by graphic symbols representing the scheme of guard posts in extermination camps. In the left part of the triangle, a teddy bear symbolizing the personal belongings of the victims of extermination camps is depicted, and in the right part of the triangle, the prison identification numbers assigned to Alfréd Wetzler and Rudolf Vrba "44070" and "29162" are inserted. In the upper left part of the coin field is the state emblem of the Slovak Republic. On the right is the year "2024" and the name of the state "SLOVAKIA". The mark of the Kremnica Mint, a state enterprise, consisting of the abbreviation "MK" placed between two dies, is at the bottom of the coin field. Reverse side: On the reverse of the collector's euro coin is the silhouette of an incomplete triangle composed of additional smaller triangles, oriented opposite to the obverse side of the collector's euro coin. The coin field is divided in the center by a vertical line. In the right part of the coin field are two male figures symbolizing escaping prisoners, complemented by the year "1944", the names and surnames "ALFRÉD WETZLER" and "RUDOLF VRBA" in two lines, and the stylized initials of the author of the collector's euro coin acad. sculptor Ivan Řehák "IŘ". The left part of the coin field is traversed by a semicircle created by graphic symbols representing the scheme of guard posts in extermination camps, which is partially mirrored in the upper right part of the coin field. In the lower left part of the coin field is the nominal value "10 EURO". source: nbs.sk
