Štefan Banič (23. 11. 1870 - 2. 1. 1941) - Slovak designer and inventor. In 1907, he went to America for work. In Pennsylvania, he worked as a miner, stonemason, and his innovative talent manifested in engineering. In 1912, he witnessed a tragic aviation accident, which prompted him to think about how to help pilots. He managed to design the first usable parachute based on the umbrella principle. The Patent Office in Washington granted him a patent on 25. 8. 1914 after demonstrated jumps - the right to manufacture, use, and sell the invention in the USA. The American army bought the patented parachute but did not introduce it into the aviation equipment. The US Air Corps accepted Banič as an honorary member. During World War I, French pilots of the Lafayette squadron probably also used Banič's parachute. Banič eventually returned to Czechoslovakia and worked in a quarry as a blasting master. He devoted himself to fruit growing and speleology. In 1930, he became a co-discoverer of the Driny cave. His career as an inventor did not continue.
