He briefly served as a chaplain in Častá, from 1789 he was a parish priest in Krušovce and gradually held various significant positions in church administration. The contemporary conditions were favorable for his advancement in the church hierarchy. In 1815, he was consecrated as the bishop of Transylvania and in 1819 he was appointed Archbishop of Esztergom and Primate of Hungary. In 1826, Pope Leo XII appointed him a cardinal (In pectore) and in 1828 the appointment was made public. In 1822, as an archbishop, he began building the Esztergom Basilica. With his support, Juraj Palkovič realized the Slovak translation of the Bible. He was a supporter of the Bernolák movement and the Slovak national movement. Thanks to him, Slovak-origin dignitaries came to significant church positions in Upper Hungary. Church ceremonies and religious education in schools were conducted in the mother tongue.
