Matica slovenská is historically the oldest and still existing institution of the Slovak nation in the field of culture, education, and science. In the history of Slovakia, it forms one of the most important chapters, especially in the years 1863 to 1875. In June 1861, the Slovak National Assembly met in Turčiansky Svätý Martin, which adopted the Memorandum of the Slovak Nation. The Memorandum is one of the most significant documents of the national-emancipatory development of Slovaks. It enshrined the main demands of Slovaks for the application of national identity in the constitutional, political, cultural, and linguistic areas. One of the demands was the establishment of Matica slovenská. The temporary preparatory committee already in 1861 prepared a draft of the Statutes of Matica slovenská and began organizing a nationwide financial collection, which was to create the prerequisites for the start of its activities. The first general assembly of Matica slovenská was held on August 4, 1863. Bishop Štefan Moyzes was elected as chairman and Karol Kuzmány as vice-chairman.
Obverse side:
On the obverse of the coin is a period depiction of the first building of Matica slovenská in Martin, complemented by a depiction of the first Statutes of Matica slovenská from 1863. In the center of the coin field is the state emblem of the Slovak Republic, below which is the name of the state SLOVAKIA and below it the year 2013. At the right edge of the coin is the designation of the nominal value of the coin 10 EURO in two lines. The mark of the Kremnica Mint MK and the stylized initials of the name and surname of the author of the coin's artistic design Karol Ličko KL are placed at the left edge of the coin.
Reverse side:
On the reverse of the coin are depicted portraits of the first leading representatives of Matica slovenská – chairman Štefan Moyzes and vice-chairmen Karol Kuzmány and Ján Francisci. In the upper part of the coin field is the year of the founding of Matica slovenská 1863. Below it is the inscription in three lines ESTABLISHMENT OF MATICA SLOVENSKÁ.
