Jozef Karol Hell (12. 5. 1713 - 10. 3. 1789) - designer of mining pumping machines, inventor, and chief mechanical master, is one of the founders of the mining tradition in Štiavnica. (The exact date of his birth is not documented and is stated as May 12, 15, and 16; a written record exists only for the date of baptism on May 16, 1713.) Like his father Matej Kornel Hell, he was involved in the construction of water reservoirs, their repairs, and the provision of energy for mining equipment. However, his greatest contribution was the invention of pumping machines, which were significantly more efficient and consumed much less water than the devices used previously. He improved conditions in the mines, especially with the inventions of the beam, water column, and air pumping machines. After their installation in the mines around Banská Štiavnica, they gradually spread to other European countries. In addition to pumping machines, he also built fire engines and ore crushing devices. He became one of their most significant designers, and as the chief mechanical master, he contributed to the fact that the mining technology used in the Banská Štiavnica area was among the most advanced in Europe in the 18th century.
Obverse:
On the obverse of the coin is depicted the New Castle – a characteristic landmark of Banská Štiavnica, which was one of the workplaces of Jozef Karol Hell. Below it is the mine environment with wooden mining structures, pumping pipes, and lizards, associated with the legend of the discovery of gold and silver and the beginning of their mining in Banská Štiavnica. In the center of the coin field is the state emblem of the Slovak Republic, and below it is the year 2013. The name of the state SLOVAKIA is inscribed along the right edge of the coin. The mark of the Kremnica Mint MK and the stylized initials of the name and surname of the coin's design author Mgr. art. Roman Lugár RL are placed along the left edge of the coin.
Reverse:
On the reverse of the coin is depicted the beam of the water column pumping machine, complemented by the oldest coat of arms of Banská Štiavnica. In the upper part of the coin field is the designation of the nominal value 10 EURO. At the bottom edge is the inscription JOZEF KAROL HELL. Above it are the dates of Hell's birth and death, 1713 and 1789, in two lines.
