Master Paul of Levoča, a carver from Spiš at the beginning of the 16th century, is one of the most significant Central European carvers. In his work, he followed the traditions of late Gothic sculpture. His work is admirable in quality and scope and ranks among the most valuable medieval monuments in Slovakia. He is the author of the monumental main altar of the Church of St. James in Levoča and other works that contributed to the city becoming part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. Winged altars from his workshop can also be admired in churches in Sabinov, Lipany, and Banská Bystrica. These altars represent complex architectures with numerous pinnacles and ornaments and integrate sculptures and panel paintings. The sculptures are characterized by theatrically stylized draperies of gilded cloaks, their faces framed by curly hair are idealized. Despite the Gothic stylization, several figures, especially crucifixes in Bardejov, Kežmarok, Spišská Nová Ves, and Spišské Vlachy, already reveal an unusual knowledge of anatomy. Together with the ornaments on some altars, this brings the Renaissance into the art of Master Paul.
Obverse:
The obverse of the coin features a detail of the Virgin Mary from the Nativity group in the parish Church of St. James in Levoča against the background of a Gothic arch and ornamental elements from Paul's workshop altars. In the left part of the coin field is the mark of the joint European silver coin program (European Silver Programme) depicting a European star and the euro symbol. The stylized initials of the name and surname of the coin's design author Mária Poldaufová MP and the mark of the Kremnica Mint are placed at its left edge.

In the right part of the coin field, among the ornamental elements, is the designation of the nominal value of the coin 10 EURO.
