Anton Bernolák (3. 10. 1762 - 15. 1. 1813) is one of the most significant figures in Slovak history. He belongs to the leading figures of Slovak national life in the second half of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. He was a prominent linguist, the first codifier of the Slovak literary language, a Catholic priest, and an active promoter of Slovak national life and education. In his linguistic works, he described all aspects of the Slovak language and, with his work Philological-Critical Treatise on Slovak Letters (Dissertatio philologico-critica de literis Slavorum) from 1787, justified the need to legislate a unified form of the Slovak literary language. In its appendix titled Orthographia, he published the first unified spelling rules of Slovak. In the book Grammatica Slavica (1790), he described its grammatical structure. He completed the scientific description of the Slovak language with the work Etymologia vocum Slavicarum (1791), in which he dealt with the methods of word formation.
