Martin Kukučín (May 17, 1860 - May 21, 1928) is one of the most significant and at the same time most popular Slovak writers. His prose work can still engage contemporary readers with its lively, natural language and timeless themes. He brought characters of ordinary village people with their everyday lives and rich linguistic expression into Slovak literature, which fundamentally influenced the further development of our prose and literary language. Among Kukučín's most famous works are short humorous prose from village (Rysavá jalovica) or student (Mladé letá) environments. During his long-term medical practice on the island of Brač, his most famous novel Dom v stráni was created. His other works are also pioneering: the psychologically penetrating novella Neprebudený, the novella Dve cesty with the theme of death and the search for the meaning of earthly existence, or the novella Dies irae, in which he raises the problem of guilt in interpersonal relationships. As a realistic prose writer, he saw the contradictions of human life, as a believing humanist, he sought its harmony.
